“Walk down the right back alley in Sin City and you can find anything.”

Certainly unexpected, co-directed by the man who swore he’d never work with Hollywood again, Sin City is a gritty, violent film noir retelling of the comic book series of the same name. Perhaps the greatest filming of a comic book ever. 5/5 not for the squeemish.

Collecting the film versions of “Sin City”, “The Big Fat Kill” and “That Yellow Bastard” the film FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY is a unique experience. Digitally filmed and altered to look as much like the comic panels as possible this movie takes no liberties with the stories and art fans Frank Miller’s Sin City have come to love. Though love for such a violent topic as Sin City is a weird connection.

Sin City is not for everyone… it’s black and white (with colour added for effect in very few scenes) and violent as hell. With stellar acting from all involved, Bruce Willis as the retiring cop, the enticing Jessica Alba as the ever alluring Nancy Callahan.

“Skinny little Nancy Callahan. She grew up. She filled out.”

Benicio Del Toro as crazed, over the edge Jackie Boy, Clive Owen as the unlucky Dwight McCarthy, and Mickey Rourke IS Marv. Honourable but confused Marv.

Rounding out the cast is a plethora of Hollywood top picks, and Rutger Hauer (again). Many folks credit Robert Rodriguez for this movie, but in my eyes this is Frank Miller thru and thru, and I see Robert Rodriguez only as Miller’s mentor in the art of filmmaking. As with any CGI/Digital film there are parts of this I didn’t like – most specifically a scene involving Marv and a car which ended up being so over the top it pulled me out of the story. But as a fan of the comics I can not give this adaption anything but top score.

Anew. It fell upon Christopher Nolan (wizard of Memento) to revive the legacy of the BatMan. Retelling the story of the loner billionaire Bruce Wayne who lost everything as a Child and takes up the fight against crime in the dusk of the night, this is truly a film in the spirit of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight. 5/5.

Revisioning (or retelling – as Nolan stays pretty true to the legacy of the DC Comics Dark Knight) we follow Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) fall from the light as it may be to his rise through years of training, from the playboy billionaire to the scourge of crime known as the Batman. Eventually returning to Gotham he is confronted by the love interest of this flick, young District Attorney Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), and spurred into action against the Scare Crow (Cillian Murphy) – possibly the best incarnation of the particular villain I’ve seen. The excellent cast is rounded out with stellar performances from Liam Neeson, Michael Cain, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freem, Ken Watanabe – and even Rutger Hauer manages a presence.

The film is much more to my envisioning of the Batman. I’ve always been more fond of the dark and gritty hero vs. villain stories – a place where Mr Freeze and his like does not fit in. And luckily this is a film that quickly lets you forget the atrociousness that was Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. In my book it trumps Batman and Batman Returns aswell.

“It has been said something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world. “

Evan is a troubled youth with a troubled past. To get by he forced himself to blackout bad memories from an early age, and at adolescence these memories come back to haunt him. Remembering these memories also allows him to revisit his past and alter it and his life. 4/5

Played by Ashton Kutcher, Evan soon realizes that you should not mess with time – as he repeatedly goes back in time to “fix” events and do right by his friends.

The Butterfly Effect is an effective science fiction time traveller film – that looks at the darker side of time travel and what it can do. There are two versions of this film about and the ending of the Director’s Cut is truly depressing and logical – and so far from your typical happy-go-ever Hollywood movies; no wonder the Theatrical release had an alternate more audience-pleasing ending.

If you can suspend you disbelief and enjoy science fiction with a bit of mystery and horror chances are that The Butterfly Effect will suit you just fine.

So you come back from the army after 8 years killing (where exactly?) and you go into the casino and start a fight – you get thrown out and beaten up, so of course you come back later with a 2-by-4 and smash up the place and the security. Then you go to trial, deny any guilt and get acquitted … AND elected Sheriff! Where? Only in Hollywood, and specifically in Walking Tall… and then the action starts! 3/5

The latest action caper from wrestling star “The Rock” , presumably a remake of the ‘73 movie with the same name based on actual events, it delivers what you would expect from a Hollywood B-movie. This is the kind of movie you would have expected from Schwarzeneger or Stallone back in the 80s mad days of action-fests, but unlike the old boys The Rock actually can speak and “fight”, and of course the production is updated for a slick Hollywood-2000 look.

For some reason the film’s love interest, dully played by Birds of Prey’s Ashely Scott, ends up in jeans, boots and a bra… that’s nicely done just stepping out of bed if you ask me – and I think there really was no reason for that beyond tempting the male-teen audience.

This isn’t the kind of movie you really award a star rating, but I guess it would earn 3 buckets of popcorn .

A people movie about love and the important things in life. The story centers around Rob (John Cusack) and his little record store, and his attempts to cope with the fact that he’s been dumped yet again. This was a great film, 5/5!

Based on the cult novel by Nick Hornby, we follow Rob as he realizes he’s growing up and that the fantasies are just that – fantasies. Having a hard time coping with his girlfriend Laura () dumping him, he recounts his five “worst” breakups and tries to figure out why they went wrong. Along the way he tries to no avail to get Laura back, indulges in new relationships laced with fantasy, and tries introspection.

“What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?” – Rob

The characters and actors are great, and the photography well done. This film just was there, it didn’t make a point out of it self, it made a point of the story. I went into this thinking this would just be an all out comedy, and boy did I miss my spot. This movie really touched me, and I’m glad I didn’t miss it.

By famed writer Kevin Smith, Dogma is the story of two dishonored angels that are trying to get back into heaven and the disillusioned, abortion-clinc worker, that must stop them to end the apocalypse and save all existence. It’s a great fantasy comedy with Jay and Bob. 4/5.

Bethany Sloane (Linda Fiorentino) is a good catholic, but she’s lost her faith. She’s single, no longer capable of giving birth, and she works in an abortion clinic constantly harassed by anti-abortion protestors. Then the Metatron (Alan Rickman), the voice of God appears before her with a quest. She needs to go to New Jersey, and stop two angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), from entering a church celebrating it’s 100th year of existence. By catholic dogma all their sins would be forgiven, and they could then reenter Heaven. Only problem is that God threw them out, and by reentering they would prove God not perfect and negate all existence. Throw into this mix Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) as the prophets, and Rufus (Chris Rock) the black 13th apostle and you know things won’t be as easy as that…

It’s not a very serious movie, and I don’t think it was meant to be, but it puts its finger on some of the quirkiness surrounding religion today. As Rufus says, “don’t stifle a good idea with belief.”

A backwards murder thriller by Christopher Nolan. It starts out with the “victim” getting his revenge. The “victim” being Guy Pearce (as Leonard Shelby), a man with no short term memory; He can not make any new memories since the murder of his wife. And thus we follow Leonard backwards in time as we find out what led to these events. An excellent thriller. 4/5.

Imagine waking up everymorning and not knowing where you are, what you are doing or why. For Leonard Shelby that is his life. He can remember everything of his life up till that moment when his wife was brutally murdered; everything since fades. How long has he been searching? The only thing he knows is what he has written down or photographed.

The film is excellently directed by Christopher Nolan, and though it is a bit hard to get into at first, being all scenes are played in “reverse” order it really works out great. As a viewer you know how it ends, but not why. And that’s the beauty of it, it keeps you guessing right through the credits and even after. Was everything as easy as that?

Some memories are best forgotten. Not this film though, check it out.

A sweeping tragedy from ancient Korea. Beautifully brought to the silver screen by Kim Young-jun it tells the story of the love that couldn\’t be between the lowly Jinha (Shin Hyun-june) and the concubines daughter Sullie (Kim Hee-sun). It\’s more action oriented than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and more \”modern\”, mixing techno and rock music into the soundtrack and having tighter editing and even more fantasy aspects. Very good, 4/5.

Sullie meets Jinha in the woods as children, were Jinha saves her from a ravaging dog with his three sword. They grow up together, him a lowly parentless peasant, her a lovely daughter from a war lords concubine. When Sullies mother dies, she is carried away by her father to be married off against her will. During this time, Jinha finds out that he is the lone descendent of the Yo family of the great old house of Ho; and that his family were killed for their secret Bichun art. Jinha masters the Bichun art and sets out after Sullie, to find her on the verge of marriage. They run off but are caught; and Jinha is seemingly killed, after finding out that Sullies father was behind the attack on his family.

It might come off as an all out action movie, but this movie is really a tragic love story. If you try to follow the story too hard you will fall off, it is after all a six volume epic comic crammed into a film just around 2 hours long. But if you kick back and enjoy it will sweep you along. Sure, some of the villains are unclear, and we don\’t know everything that goes on. But we do know that Jinha loves Sullie, Sullie loves Jinha, and their love can never be. And on top of this, everyone wants the Bichun secretes, and Jinha needs to avenge the murder of his parents.

Brendan Fraser plays Stu Miley, successful creator of the comic strip Monkeybone. Stu is happy and on the verge of big success, when a car accident puts him in a coma. While girlfriend Julie (Bridget Fonda) maintains a constant bedside vigil to his comatose body, his “spirit” is stuck “Downtown” – a place where comatose people wait for life – or death. While in “Downtown” Monkeybone springs to life, and together they plan to outwith Death, steal an exit pass and return Stu to his girlfriend up in the living world before his sister pulls the plug. But Monkeybone and Hypnos, the master of “Downtown” and lord of nightmares, has another plan…

This movie was based on the comic “Dark Town” by Kaja Blackley, and it’s definitly a movie you’ll either lover or hate, my only suggestion is to watch it with an open mind without any expectations!

Jackie Chan produces, directs and stars as “Dragon”, a lazy richman son that will do anything to escape his studies and chase after girls. Amidst these plots he and his friend “Cowboy” stumbles across a band of rouges planning to steal the “Chinese Treasure”. It’s got none of the landmark stunts that mark a Jackie Chan movie, and there’s really just one fight. Most people see Jackie Chan movies for either the stunts, the fights or both – and this movie is really lacking in both areas. For me, the most interesting part was the game of Shuttle-Cock, and I’m not even a sports fan. Only recommended if you are a die hard Jackie fan.
