The Butterfly Effect (2004)

August 18th, 2004

“It has been said something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world. “

Evan is a troubled youth with a troubled past. To get by he forced himself to blackout bad memories from an early age, and at adolescence these memories come back to haunt him. Remembering these memories also allows him to revisit his past and alter it and his life. 4/5

Played by Ashton Kutcher, Evan soon realizes that you should not mess with time – as he repeatedly goes back in time to “fix” events and do right by his friends.

The Butterfly Effect is an effective science fiction time traveller film – that looks at the darker side of time travel and what it can do. There are two versions of this film about and the ending of the Director’s Cut is truly depressing and logical – and so far from your typical happy-go-ever Hollywood movies; no wonder the Theatrical release had an alternate more audience-pleasing ending.

If you can suspend you disbelief and enjoy science fiction with a bit of mystery and horror chances are that The Butterfly Effect will suit you just fine.
