Dogma (1999)
April 1st, 2002By famed writer Kevin Smith, Dogma is the story of two dishonored angels that are trying to get back into heaven and the disillusioned, abortion-clinc worker, that must stop them to end the apocalypse and save all existence. It’s a great fantasy comedy with Jay and Bob. 4/5.
Bethany Sloane (Linda Fiorentino) is a good catholic, but she’s lost her faith. She’s single, no longer capable of giving birth, and she works in an abortion clinic constantly harassed by anti-abortion protestors. Then the Metatron (Alan Rickman), the voice of God appears before her with a quest. She needs to go to New Jersey, and stop two angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), from entering a church celebrating it’s 100th year of existence. By catholic dogma all their sins would be forgiven, and they could then reenter Heaven. Only problem is that God threw them out, and by reentering they would prove God not perfect and negate all existence. Throw into this mix Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) as the prophets, and Rufus (Chris Rock) the black 13th apostle and you know things won’t be as easy as that…
It’s not a very serious movie, and I don’t think it was meant to be, but it puts its finger on some of the quirkiness surrounding religion today. As Rufus says, “don’t stifle a good idea with belief.”
