Memento (2000)

March 31st, 2002

A backwards murder thriller by Christopher Nolan. It starts out with the “victim” getting his revenge. The “victim” being Guy Pearce (as Leonard Shelby), a man with no short term memory; He can not make any new memories since the murder of his wife. And thus we follow Leonard backwards in time as we find out what led to these events. An excellent thriller. 4/5.

Imagine waking up everymorning and not knowing where you are, what you are doing or why. For Leonard Shelby that is his life. He can remember everything of his life up till that moment when his wife was brutally murdered; everything since fades. How long has he been searching? The only thing he knows is what he has written down or photographed.

The film is excellently directed by Christopher Nolan, and though it is a bit hard to get into at first, being all scenes are played in “reverse” order it really works out great. As a viewer you know how it ends, but not why. And that’s the beauty of it, it keeps you guessing right through the credits and even after. Was everything as easy as that?

Some memories are best forgotten. Not this film though, check it out.
