Magnolia (1999)
February 21st, 2002Where to start? When it rains it really pours. Especially true for this P.T. Anderson movie. Nicely coreographed, with stellar performances from Tom Cruise amongst others. “Respect the cock!”? Not the most entertaining, or should I say cheerful movie, but it is a good movie. I give it 5/6.
What I find extremely satisfying about this movie is that the supporting cast is not “just there” but we really get inside them and know what makes them tick. In a movie that mainly is about two parallell stories, we intercut a lot between several different people and subplots which all tie together in the end. Unfortunately this is what makes it a bit long.
You could go on and on about how great the story was, or how great the acting was, the excellent cinematography et cetera et cetera. Ultimately this movie is about the most important thing: simply living day to day with all the tragedies and frustrations that can happen in our lives. It starts with a string of “coincidences” and delves into the “life” of these on-screen characters, managing to deliver a realistic view.
Still, I didn’t quite get the meaning of the frogs in the final moments of the film; maybe some biblical reference. It’s a movie that either makes you thing about your life, where you have been, where you are going, or simply makes you go: “what? I sat through three hours for that?”. Personally I think it was worth it, but you got to be in the mood. If you want fast action and funs, go for Lethal Weapon 3 or 4. If you want a good movie about people, and people problems, see mangolia.
